Parents, Students, laud ECUDOMEF Chairperson – Prof. Viola Onwuliri for facilitating F. G. C Admissions.
Recently, some very qualified students from the South East could exhale with visible joy and excitement, after overcoming the challenges posed by disparity in admission cut off scores tilted against South East States to secure admissions into Federal Government Colleges (FGCs).
These cheery outcomes were facilitated by the intervention of the former Minister of State for Education, Professor Viola Onwuliri, on request of the parents. Some of the successful students include, Nwaneri , Ruth Amarachi; Nwoga, Chiagozikam Gabriella; Isaac, Favour Amarachi; Okoroji, Treasure Chigozie; Emeh , Michella Ifeanyichukwu; and Edward Onyekachi. They are to go collect the letters of admission in the different FGCs or Federal Government Girls Colleges (FGGCs) so they can begin classes.
The disparity in the admission process into FGCs and its impact particularly in the South East has posed significant headache for students and parents alike, and has remained controversial. There are different cut off marks for different states, with the policy skewed in favour of the North, even though the preliminary intent of the FGCs (also called Unity Colleges), is to foster unity among Nigeria’s over 300 ethnic nationalities.
To keep the hope of getting on the admission list alive, the cut-off mark system requires candidates from states in the South-East and South-West to score significantly higher marks than their counterparts from the North, or those states dubbed educationally disadvantaged.
Out of 300 possible points as variously reported, the cut of mark for candidates from Anambra State is 139, Imo 138, Enugu 134, Delta 131, Lagos 133, and Ogun State 131. For a candidate from Kebbi State the cut off mark is 9 for male and 20 for female. Sokoto is 9 for male and 13 for female. Taraba is three for male and 11 for female. Yobe is two for male and 27 female. In Zamfara, a male candidate that scores four qualifies and a female candidate that scores two qualifies too.
The Federal Government should invest resources to expand available institutions. instead of erecting artificial hurdles for qualified students from the South.
